It has been a good tournament so far for Africa at the Fifa U20 World Cup as all four teams from the continent reached the knock out stage Nigeria, Senegal, Ghanaand Maliall reached the second round in New Zealand, as the Flying Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Hungary on Sunday morning.
Ghana finished top of their Group B ahead of Austria as they eliminated six-time champions Argentina.
The 2009 world champions will now face fellow West Africans Mali in the knock outs. Both teams played the third and fourth place match at the African Youth Championship in Senegal last March. Sellas Tetteh’s side edged that game and would hope to win again when they meet in Wellington on June 10.
Mali finished second in Group D behind Serbia. Second place finishers at the AYC, Senegal finished in third place in Group C behind Portugal and Colombia but their four points meant they took one of the best third-placed tickets. The debutants would face Ukraine in Auckland on June 10.
African champions Nigeria finished second in Group E after rallying from an opening 4-2 loss to Brazil to beat Korea DPR and Hungary 4-0 and 2-0 respectively. The Flying Eagles have set up a date with European champions Germany in Christchurch on Thursday, June 11. Germany are captained by Kevin Akpogumawhose father hails from Nigeria.
