Adhere to core civil service values, Mede tells Nigerian workforce.

The Federal Ministry of Environment has inaugurated the Ministerial Servicom Committee at its headquarters in Abuja to checkmate the ugly trend in the delivery of quality service to Nigerians.

While administering the oath of office, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Nana Fatima Mede pledged to serve Nigeria in a fair, honest, timely and transparent manner, urging the other committee members to abide by the core values of the civil service in service delivery. She added that Government will do all it could to ensure that the country takes its rightful position in the comity of nations.

Nana Mede further hinted that Nigerians have a role to play in contributing their quota to ensuring the greatness of the country. He also urged members to take the charge seriously; saying Nigeria is regarded as the most populous black nation in Africa with large emerging economy, especially in service delivery. She observed that it is a privilege to serve the country and be remembered for contributing towards moving the country forward. She charged the members to be committed and dedicated to their job in service to the country, so as to make meaningful impact.

During his address at the occasion, the Director of Reform Co-ordination, BelemaWakama stated that the Nigeria Civil Service has been described as inefficient, inept and corrupt by stakeholders and as such characterized by service failures. She opined that the federal government introduced the SERVICOM in 2004 and made it mandatory for every Ministries, Departments and Agencies to have functional units and committees.

BelemaWakama noted that the service charters will act as the working tools for the committee wherever their services are rendered to the public to serve as guide for stakeholders.
She further informed that suggestion boxes, directional charts and rolling banners have been used to indicate the ministry's mission, vision and mandate mounted at very strategic locations; explaining that presently history has been made with the inauguration of the Ministerial SERVICOM Committee to move the Ministry to the next level.

"The committee's terms of reference will be amongst others – spearheading their departments' service delivery initiative through SERVICOM compliance;
-serving as links between their respective departments and the Department of Reform Coordination and Service Improvement;
-facilitating safe and conducive working environment for staff at all the levels of service delivery; troubleshooting service failures and developing proposals to address them in their respective departments and units as well as researching and identifying good practices that can be adopted or adapted to improve service delivery in the Ministry," she averred.

The representative from the national body of SERVICOM, Nnenna Akajemeli while speaking at the inauguration said that the inaugural event is aimed at re-invigorating and repositioning the Ministry and its parastatals for quality service delivery. She emphasized that the timing of the event was most appropriate and could not have been better than then, bearing in mind the significant role which the Federal Ministry of Environment plays in the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Nnenna Akajemeli reiterated that the primary purpose of governance is the provision of basic services that will improve the quality of life of the citizens, protect lives and property. She charged the members to be committed, dedicated and to ensure accountability and transparency in the discharge of quality service delivery.

She identified the Ministerial SERVICOM Committee to include: the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry – Nana Fatima Mede; the Director of Reform Coordination – Belema Wakama and the R.C Nodal Officer – Ismaila Bidon.
